Chapter Four

N

o one had said anything for at least ten minutes. Feng now knew the true meaning of the silence was deafening… There was a lot to think about. He wondered if at twenty-one he was ready to die…or if he was ready to live forever. And ultimately, it wasn’t even his choice.

Banpaia.

He looked over now at Ki, and he envied him. He was so sure of what he wanted. Ki wanted to be with him forever!

So did Vincent.

It was only he and Russell who hadn’t declared that they were willing to give him their lives. Surrender their lives to him…to live with him eternally.

A shiver ran down his spine.

Russell glanced at him and then moved closer.

“He’ll come for you tonight.”

“I know.” And instinctively, he did know. He hadn’t needed Vincent to tell him. And he was anticipating it eagerly, and that horrified him somehow. “The sex was…”

“Sublime,” Ki supplied from across the room.

There was a resounding silence which confirmed that no one could have said it better.

Feng tilted his head and looked at Ki. “Aren’t you afraid?”

“No. Why should I be afraid? It will only end badly for the three of you. Where I’m concerned, there will be no pain. There will only be eternal life with him…as his lover, his companion. I shall be his willing slave eternally.”

“If he chooses you,” Vincent snapped. “Your arrogance is astounding.”

“I know him the best. I read the entire book. He gave me the time to read it all. That should be proof enough.”

“That’s means nothing,” Russell commented.

Feng looked at him.

“Well, it doesn’t,” Russell protested.

“It’s not that. It’s just that I thought—”

“That I’d want to die? Feng,” he moved closer, looked into his eyes, “that is the alternative. He has narrowed it down to the four of us. One of us will live forever, the rest of us…” He trailed off. “Well, you know how it ends.”

“I don’t understand why we aren’t returned to life like the others who came out of the fog,” Feng protested.

“We know too much now,” Vincent supplied the reason.

“We have tasted heaven,” Ki said. “How could any of you be content after that with an ordinary lover? It is more humane just to put you down.”

“You son of a…” Russell growled. He made a lunge for Ki.

They fought and wrestled vigorously, but none of the blows they exchanged had any impact.

“You might as well knock it off,” Vincent told them. “You can never hurt each other. You are his candidates, and he will not allow any harm to come to us until he makes his choice.”

Russell released Ki from where he had him pinned over the kitchen table. They both went back to their respective corners like two defeated boxers after the bell had been rung.

The hours ticked by and night fell. When the mist rolled in through the window, Feng lay stretched out on the sofa, dozing.

The first thing he felt was the cold, not ordinary cold. It was as if he’d been suddenly plunged into a freezer.
